MLB Baseball - Philadelphia Phillies
Philadelphia the sixth largest city in the United States is rich and history as the place where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were drafted and signed and the adopted home to American leaders including Benjamin Franklin. The city of brotherly love is one of 13 cities home to four major sports teams. In Philadelphia these are the Eagles for football the 76ers for basketball the Flyers for hockey and the Phillies for baseball.
The Philadelphia Phillies are the oldest one-name one-city franchise sports team still playing today. The team debuted in 1883 as the Quakers before changing its name to the Philadelphias eventually becoming the Phillies by 1890. They won their first pennant in 1915 with the help of baseball greats Grover Cleveland Alexander and Gavvy Cravath.
The team playing at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia since 2004 has earned two World Series titles to date. The first came nearly a century after the team was founded in 1980 against Kansas City. The team won another World Series title in 2008 against Tampa Bay.
The Phillies have a total of seven National League pennants to their credit to date. Unfortunately due to the team's long history it also has the not-so-glorious distinction of the most losses in among all North American sports teams. The team flourished in the 1940s thanks to baseball greats and future Hall of Famers Robin Roberts Richie Ashburn and Dick Sisler. These were among players nicknamed the Whiz Kids an era that continued through 1969.
The team is known for its long rivalry with the New York Mets. The competition between the two teams has heated up over the past few years as both teams have vied for playoff positions. Notable players produced by Philadelphia's baseball team include Johnny Evers Bucky Harris Hughie Jennings Nap Lajoie Tommy McCarthy Kid Nichols Eppa Rixey Casey Stengel Lloyd Waner and Harry Wright. Fans throughout the city and the world support the team with a record for 100 consecutive sellouts set in 2010. | Year Entered MLB | 1883 |
