NFL Football - Detroit Lions

Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan with a populations of 713,777 (2010). Fort Ponchartrain du Détroit was founded by French explorer Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac in July of 1701 and and the British took control of the city during the French and Indian War and renamed it Detroit. Detroit is a major manufacturing community, home to the three major automobile companies, hence the nickname Motor City. 

With the auto industrie's prominent presence in Detroit, automobile racing and motorsports are a popular Detroit experience. The Motorsports Hall of Fame calls Detroit its home.  Performing arts and entertainment have always been a prominent part of Detroit's character. Detroit's passion for live music started in the 1940's and brought the nickname "Motown". The Detroit International Jazz Festival is hosted in the city annually and is one of the world most respected by the international Jazz community.

Detroit has teams from all four major professional sports, NBA Detroit Pistons, MLB Detroit Tigers, NHL Detroit Red Wings and NFL Detroit Lions.  In 1929 the Portsmouth Spartans were established as an independent professional football team.  The following year they joined the NFL and in 1934 they were moved to Detroit and became the Detroit Lions.  The Lions have brought Detroit four NFL championships.
