Buffalo was originally named New Amsterdam. The 25 residents did not like this name and renamed the village to Buffalo after the nearby Buffalo Creek. A population of 261,310 people (2010 estimate) live in Buffalo . Buffalo is located on the shores of Lake Erie and at the head of Niagara River. Downtown is just 17 miles from Niagara falls. The population spiked after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. Today the largest growth sectors are health and education because of Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and The University of Buffalo. Forbes ranked Buffalo the 10th best place to raise a family in 2010.
Buffalo is home to a number of attractions including the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, Buffalo Museum of Science and the Buffalo Zoo. Buffalo is also the home to many professional sports teams including the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bandits Lacrosse team. The Buffalo Bills were named by a winning entry from a contest and the cheerleaders are called Buffalo Jills.
